Restoration of Cultural Heritage
Giulio Romano's Fish Market in Mantua
After years of substantial neglect, the Pescherie di Levante, a sixteenth-century work by the architect Giulio Romano and a symbol of the city of Mantua, have been brought back to life thanks to the initiative promoted by the “Fondazione Le Pescherie di Giulio Romano” and the use of H-BIM (Historic Building Information Modelling).
This innovative methodology was fundamental to the project and allowed for better planning of the restoration work, creating a digital model of the historic building that enabled a thorough understanding of the artefact. A sort of virtual “medical record” composed of documents, surveys, photographs, and models, enabling the studio responsible for the restoration to find the best possible solution for the recovery work.
Dimensions and materials but also states of deterioration, historic phases, works envisaged by the architect, and data from the contractor that carried out the work. This is a non-exhaustive list of the data that has been entered into the digital archive and can be consulted through the model. These will accompany the building throughout the remainder of its life cycle, facilitating the task of those responsible for its protection and future maintenance work.

“The use of the H-BIM methodology initially provided us with a deeper and more informed understanding of the building, which in turn enabled more precise design work. Subsequently, this approach resulted in a valuable digital archive that is accessible and easy to explore.”
