Architecture for Social Good
Cascina Ri-Nascita, Milano
A project of significant social value that involves the regeneration and repurposing of a traditional 19th-century Milanese courtyard farmstead to provide a safe place for women escaping violence. The project originated from the collaboration between the anti violence centres SVS DAD and CADMI and the sports association Campacavallo, which were awarded the right to use the farmstead for 90 years by the Municipality of Milan.
Starting from the concept created by CRA – Carlo Ratti Associati and Italo Rota, DVArea has developed the integrated design and is overseeing the construction supervision, combining project sensitivity with technical expertise, providing timely and specific responses to the needs as they arise from the client.
The project involves the restoration and redevelopment for the enhancement of a complex otherwise destined for disrepair. A project in energy class A4 that ensures very high thermal performance, energy savings, and environmental sustainability, by adopting a mix of solutions such as geothermal energy, photovoltaics, home automation, and thermal insulation.
To ensure quality, resolution of clashes (whether spatial, system, or design-related), careful monitoring, and cost management, the use of the BIM methodology was employed, which enabled the assignment of a digital prototype to each element, thus creating a consolidated information base for the construction phase of the project and for future maintenance interventions.

“Thanks to one of the fortunate circumstances surrounding the realization of Cascina Ri-Nascita, I had the chance to meet Armando Casella, CEO of DVA. He, along with Marta Olivieri, Enzo Zogno, and many others who supported us, resolved every technical and procedural issue. They responded to my requests at any time. They worked with me—a doctor and an unconventional project manager—with just the right touch of humor, and as construction managers, they have been and will continue to be the best possible anxiolytic.”
“For the past two years, I’ve had the honor of meeting and collaborating with Alessandra Kustermann in the development of the Ri-Nascita initiative. A project that enriches me every day—professionally, but above all personally—and one I can’t wait to see come to life, thanks in part to the contribution of DVArea. Because violence and discrimination are also fought by building better cities and architectures.”
