Child-oriented redesign

DVArea oversaw the redevelopment project from concept design through to construction management, adopting an integrated, transdisciplinary approach that involved both the local administration and educational staff to translate pedagogical needs into architectural solutions. 

This dialogue became the guiding principle in designing spaces and learning environments capable of acting as a “pedagogical agent”: places designed to respond to the needs of those who inhabit them while reflecting the cultural identity of Ghedi’s educational community. The “evaluation matrix” adopted for the project assessed functional, economic and psycho-pedagogical aspects, and was fundamental in guiding the design choices. 

The redevelopment of the building introduced new indoor and outdoor spaces, higher ceilings in the classrooms, large glazed surfaces that strengthen the connection with nature, and a new portico allowing the outdoor areas to be used throughout the year. The portico also contributes to the building’s energy efficiency by shading the south-facing classrooms from excessive solar radiation. 

The focus on the wellbeing of children and educational staff is combined with advanced technological solutions, including photovoltaic systems, building automation systems for energy management, acoustic comfort measures and barrier-free accessibility. The new building achieves nZEB standards, consuming approximately 30% less primary energy than a conventional building. 

Construction management supported the project throughout the construction phase until completion in early June 2026, ensuring compliance with the deadlines required to access PNRR funding. This was achieved despite several unforeseen issues that emerged during construction, including structural challenges, which required careful management of the works and continuous coordination among the various parties involved. 

The new nursery school will be inaugurated at the end of August 2026, completing the transformation of the northern wing into a place dedicated to the growth, wellbeing and learning of young children.
