Landscape-sensitive infrastructural design for Val Vigezzo
PAYSAGE TOPSCAPE is one of the most prestigious publications in the field of contemporary landscape design. DVA’s project for the SS 337 Variant of the Val Vigezzo (a regional road in northern Italy) has been featured in issue 52, in the “Work in Progress” section.
Carried out in partnership with Pro Iter Group (lead contractor), Erre.Vi.A., and Sinergo, the project aimed at securing and functionally redeveloping a stretch of road connecting Italy with the Canton of Ticino. This section, situated in a valley renowned for its exceptional natural beauty and commonly referred to as the “Valley of the Painters”, is among the most picturesque locations in Italy for admiring the autumn foliage.
A complex and challenging infrastructure project, owing to the distinctive morphology of the valley, in which DVA was responsible for all landscape and environmental aspects.
Working in close collaboration with ANAS, an intervention was conceived that would not alter the landscape, favouring the use of local materials such as stone for cladding and colours in harmony with the environment, including the reconfiguration of disused sections of the current route and “stitching” interventions where the impact of the new construction was most significant.
