ChorusLife: the first BIM Unit on site for a large-scale urban regeneration project

DVArea · 20 November 2024

DVArea at the Costim construction site to manage the construction design and as-built documentation using an innovative approach.

The construction of ChorusLife, a futuristic neighbourhood born from the vision of Domenico Bosatelli and inaugurated this week in Bergamo, required an innovative approach on site as well.

DVA, a company within the DVArea group, was commissioned by the contractor Impresa Percassi to develop the construction design and provide site support. For this reason, a BIM & Construction Unit was established on site — an approach previously tested by DVA at the construction site of Pier C at Leonardo da Vinci Airport in Fiumicino, and implemented here for the first time in a large-scale urban regeneration project of this magnitude.

A team of professionals was present on site for over four years, managing the construction process and the as-built documentation using information management tools, model authoring platforms, issue tracking systems, and time and cost control solutions, thereby providing consultancy and decision-making support to both the site supervision team and the contractor.

«At ChorusLife, a new approach to project development and site management was pioneered, handling the complexity of a large-scale intervention in a smart way and with advanced tools.»

Andrea Solazzi, co-founder of DVArea and technical coordinator of the Bim Unit

This innovative approach transformed the construction site into a strategic hub where the project could be developed and coordinated alongside suppliers and contractors, construction phases could be planned, and progress could be monitored in terms of quantities and timelines. Additionally, the BIM model was updated in real time, ensuring a constantly up-to-date reference for verifying subsequent work stages.

The BIM management of the entire construction phase has resulted in a comprehensive and up-to-date model of structured information and data, which will be instrumental in implementing the digital twin of ChorusLife. This will enable Costim to collect real-time information on the condition of the smart district, allowing for the monitoring and enhancement of sustainability, liveability, and user experience.
